She rand and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, "They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"

Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn't go in. Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings laying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. Then the disciples who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed -- for until then they still hadn't understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must raise from the dead. Then they went home."

John 20:1-10

These verses are often read during the Easter season. Pastor after Pastor preaches on it as we remember the death of Christ and how He arose from the dead to provide victory over death. There is a verse in these ten verses that sparked a question in my mind the other day. Verse 4 reads:

"They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first."

I have read this verse often and I just fly by it as if it holds no importance. The other day something hit me. I believe there is a reason that John mentions that Peter was behind the other disciple.

When I was a kid, I often did things that were wrong. I would get in trouble by my mother and she would often speak the words "Wait until your father gets home!" I knew that when my father got home, I would be punished. The time between my mom spoken word and my dad's arrival was not a pleasant time. I didn't look forward to my father coming home nor did I look forward to what would happen when He did make it home.

I believe Peter was the same way. He had "gotten in trouble" in his mind. He had denied Christ at a vital time. He wasn't looking forward to going to see a risen Christ. He wasn't looking forward to possibly seeing Christ. He didn't want the "punishment" of his betrayal.

Oh how often do we sin and not ask for forgiveness and seek into repentance because we are afraid of the punishment. We are afraid of coming in contact with a risen Christ that hates sin.

How often do we not want to run as fast as we can to the empty tomb because we are afraid of what is there, or isn't?

Never can there be a boring moment

I'm on Spring Break!! While it's exciting to be away from school for awhile and get to spend some time with family and close friends, I do miss Courtney and everybody at Greer First. Oh well, I get to spend all summer with them so I will enjoy the time in Coats as much as I can.

I had to take my computer to Bust Buy today. The guy from the Geek Squad (I really want one of their outfits and that cool button on their ties) told me that it's probably my motherboard. Oh the joys of computer. Praise the Lord for 3 year warranties.

I'm really excited about tomorrow. Not because I have to have my braces looked at, but because I get to eat dinner with one of my great friends Justin. I will have to update you on that tomorrow night in a different blog post.

Death seems to be present everywhere I look. How odd is it that human death is surrounding me at the same time that nature is coming back to life. I ponder on all of this because I got an e-mail from Tiffany (Church Receptionist) saying that a church member that Lance and I had visited in the hospital had passed away. Also, a dear family friend's father passed away about an hour after I got home for Spring Break. May the Lord of peace grant that peace to these loved ones today and in the days to come.

On my drive home on Monday the Lord was just speaking a few words into my heart. I kept hearing Him say "I am ALIVE and ACTIVE." I am looking forward to finding out what the Lord wants to teach me with those two words. It's just amazing to sit back and remember that the Lord is active in the world and in our lives even when we don't see or feel Him.

Greer lost in the State Championship, if anybody cares. They played a great game and had an amazing season. I'm very proud of the guys that I know on the team and I look forward to seeing what they will do next year.

Sunday, Rick talked about Christ's time in the garden before His betrayal. It was good!!

The West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptist keeps changing staff people. I saw in the newsletter that one of the ladies at the convention will be leaving. I guess I will have to hurry up and get up there if I want anything in West Virginia to be the same as when I left.

Just a last little thought on ministry. We, as humans, allow our sin to get in the way too often and that makes ministry a little more complicated than it really is.

Don't move, until God tells you to move. And when God tells you to move, you move and you don't wait to see if others are going to like it or not.

Well, I have had enough random thoughts for today. I am so very hungry so I am going to find me food and enjoy the night.

I'll post tomorrow night about my visit with Justin and maybe some more stuff.

Until then, love God and love people. That's all that really matters.

Road to Columbia

On Saturday, the Greer High School Boys Basketball team traveled to the Bi-Lo Center for the UpperState Championship. A church’s health is based on many things. Not one thing can bring about a healthy church nor can one single person causes a church to be healthy. I believe there are 6 characteristics to a healthy church. I will highlight these characteristics in my next 3 blog post in a series entitled “A healthy church is…”.

1. A healthy church is Biblical.

If any sin in the local church can be considered “the worse”, I believe it is that we are not biblical. A healthy church is biblical. Its leaders teach the scriptures in a bold and convicting manner. A healthy church allows scripture to be the bases of all of its functions and programs. There is nothing that it does that isn’t grounded in scripture. The Bible is the beginning and end of all that the church does. If the Bible is not our foundation, then there is no possible way for a church to exist in a healthy and vibrant way.

2. A healthy church is Honest.

Honesty is a lost quality in our world today. If any group of people sound find honesty the most important and vital thing, it should be the church. We must be honest with ourselves and each other. We must admit our sin to the world. We must let go of our pride and allow the world to see that we are just as much sinners in need of a savior as they are. We are nothing without Christ. We must accept that fact and embrace it. We must let down our wall and let go of our attitude that we are better than another. We must be honest.

Growth?

I just read an article that I really liked. This must be our present action. We are a generation away from shutting down these doors. If we don't give it to them, they WILL go somewhere else to find it."

I saw a movie the other day that lead me to think for a moment. The movie was a man by the name of Reggie Joiner speaking at The Orange Conference. He talked about Children and Student Ministry and how to do "pull them off" in a way that not only honors God, but causes true spiritual growth that will last.

I was sitting there thinking for a little bit. These ideas cannot wait for another time and another place. Too often we sit down and think of ideas and plans and place them on the back burner of our "To-Do List" and never see it really heated up and served to it's greatest potential. These ideas that Reggie Joiner brought to the table is allowing Students (Middle School, High School, and even College aged) to experience ministry through serving in the local church. Joiner challenges ministry leaders to allow students to get involved in minitry and service in order to allow them to experience a Great God and a LOVE for the world.

I know this all sounds great. Allowing students to help with Children's Ministry and allow College Students to help with Student Ministry. Not only does it train leaders and allow them to serve, it builds relationships that are possibly the best ones to have. A student in High School would much rather have a 21 year old college student investing in them than a 40 year old parent of their best friend.

So what do we do? We allow students to serve. We give them experience. We don't allow them to serve for just one week in a far off land (Mission Trips) and then place them back into a classroom setting for the next year until we feel like taking them away again. We must allow them to funnel the engery, desire, and passion that they have after a mission trip and let them use it in the local church and in our local communities.

It is time to start allow our young people to lead and serve in a way that we can be proud of. If they don't serve now, then when will they serve? After watching the video, I wrote down the quote that is at the top of this blog.

It's either now or never. Allow students to serve is not something that we can put off for another year or two. If they want to serve, they will go somewhere else to find it.

This generation wants:
direct action with direct results and direct involvment.

It's time to give it to them.

A Higher Calling.

In Sunday School, Wes, my teacher, stated something that I loved. What indeed does this world need? What do they need from us as followers of Christ who should love them and embrace them no matter who they are and where they come from. Here are the lyrics to that song.

"What this world needs
Is not another one hit wonder with an axe to grind
Another two bit politician peddling lies
Another three ring circus society

What this world needs
Is not another sign waving super saint that's better than you
Another ear pleasing candy man afraid of the truth
Another prophet in an Armani suit

CHORUS:
What this world needs is a Savior who will rescue
A Spirit who will lead
A Father who will love them in their time of need
A Savior who will rescue
A Spirit who will lead
A Father who will love
That's what this world needs

What this world needs
Is for us to care more about the inside than the outside
Have we become so blind that we can't see
God's gotta change her heart before
He changes her shirt
What this world needs
Is for us to stop hiding behind our relevance
Blending in so well that people can't see the difference
And it's the difference that sets the world free"
~"What This World Needs." by Casting Crowns

The words in blue brought about some thoughts in my mind. The first verse states "Another prophet in an Armani suit". This brought to my mind the thought that the world doesn't need what the local church keeps producing. They don't need mega churches who are places upon a pedestal for all church to look upon as though they are not doing enough because they don't have the numbers, budgets, and facilities that "mega churches" have. The world doesn't need our "superstar" preachers that spend more time on Larry King Live and CNN then they do in their streets of their communities reaching out to the "least of these". I am not sure what the church (in general) is doing wrong, but it's happening. We are doing something wrong, and it's time for us to find the problem and fix it.

I believe the second verse brings up questions about ourselves. What are we doing to show a difference in our lives. The world doesn't need our hypocrisy. The world needs US being real in our lives and for US to see them as human beings. We need to truly find value in our relationship with the Lord as we say that we need. We need to value it more than we value college football, money, high school basketball, and whatever else stands our way to be an effective witness for Jesus Christ.

The song ends with a dialogue that is very appropriate. The dialogue goes like this:

"People aren't confused by the Gospel.
They are confused by us.
Jesus is the only way to God,
but we are not the only way to Jesus.
This world doesn't need my tith, my hoodie, my denomination, or my translation of the Bible.
They just need Jesus.
We can be passions about what we believe,
but we can't strap ourselves to the Gospel, because we are slowing it down.
Jesus is going to save the world, but maybe the best thing we can do is to just get out of the way."

May we need be the cause of the Gospel slowing down.

So, what does this world need?
The answer is simple. What we are not giving them.

love God. love people.

Unforgetable Characteristic

"You are God alone
From before time began
You were on Your throne
Your are God alone"
~Phillips, Craig, and Dean

How often we forget the message that these lyrics send. We forget that the God that we worship here in the present time is the God of all time. He is the God that watched over us during World War II. He is the God that watched our country in times of the Great Depression. He is the God that many of our founding fathers sought after as they built the country that we sit in today.

He is the God that was with Paul in prision. He is the God that stirred up the HIS movement of HIS body that we read about in the letters from Paul. He is the God that sent HIS spirit down as our great comforter. He is the one, and with HIS power, rose His only son from the grave. He is the one that allowed His son to die a death that he did not deserve. He is the God that sent His perfect son to a sin filled world.

He is the God that David worshipped. He is the God that brought down the giant. He is the God that took His children through the Red Sea. He is the God that brought about the plagues. He is the God that created, watches over, and rules the earth.

He is the God that holds victory. He will win in the end and that's all that matters. He is the God that we will worship and serve for eternity. He is the God that will sit on the throne forever.

How often we forget that we serve such an amazing God. A God that has been here before the start of the world, a God that is with us at this very moment in a very personal way, and the God that will reign forever as Lord and Ruler of this earth.

NewSpring Church: Rated PG?

Perry Noble, Pastor of NewSpring Church, stated the following in one of his recent sermons.

"If you are not serious about reaching people for Christ and bringing them into this fellowship then get the hell out of here."

What should we be more offended about? type='text'>An Epidemic of Visions

An Epidemic of Visions
By: Andrew Austin

The idea is great. Even the purpose can be looked upon as a wonderful attempt to unite a body of believers behind a common goal and interest. The idea of “vision meetings” has swept across our country as the epidemic worsens. The epidemic is deadly and if not cured can bring about the death of the local church and the souls that we are commissioned to reach. The epidemic is a lack of vision.

Churches gather for one night or even weekends to discuss the bodies’ dreams and visions. Staff, Deacons, and Leadership spend weeks and months planning and praying over strategies and plans as they seek to unite a church behind a purpose and solid vision for the future.

Church after church has found itself in this situation. Losing its visions and dreams, the church flounders resulting in a decrease in attendance, baptisms, and giving. The joy and excitement that once characterized the church is gone. Effectiveness in ministry declines. Why has this epidemic struck now and with such intensity? What good will come out of what has swept the churches of America?

I am not sure we can fully bring out an answer to the question of why the epidemic has struck now and at such a rapid speed. I believe we can find some light in the idea that churches in America often base their programming and ideas on others churches as we trying to compete for membership and to have the most “attractive” programming around. We are often greater followers of other churches and organizations than we are of Christ and the scriptures upon which these programs are based.

The complexity and busyness of church programming, the sinful nature of man, and the general disunity of the body, are a few other possible reasons for such a massive wave of meetings. While all of these reasons play into the epidemic, it is possible that God has begun to change the vision of churches to meet the demands and cultural changes of the world that we are to minister to in 2009.

Is it possible that the visions that we set five years ago are no longer relevant to our ever changing world? No one can deny that the world has changed in the last ten years, yet alone the last fifteen or twenty years. The change in culture as well as the world’s outlook on the local church and God has forced the local church to reexamine its visions, dreams, goals, and evangelical efforts as it plays catch up with the culture. If the church does not change, the world will leave it behind in a whirlwind of smoke and fire. If our goal is not to reach the world, then it is time to shut the doors of the church, make some renovations, and reopen as the local country club with membership dues starting at $50.

The last question, what good will these meetings do, can possibly be the trickiest to answer. No matter what happens in the local church there is always a risk that someone is not going to like it. The risk is always there, but it must be faced in order for any church to move in any direction. Still, what good will come out of these meetings? Will goals and visions be set yet not be accomplished due to lack of funding and an increase in opposition, or will the goals and visions be met in a triumphant manner with a body unified behind winning souls? I fear that the former is more likely. I fear that we (the church of America) will find ourselves back here in the same situation year after year.

I believe that the cure to the epidemic will come about within the local church as churches take a serious look at what God calls the church to be in Acts. Each church must examine its self. We must take a look at our abilities, talents, and needs within our congregation. We must also take time to look outward into our communities. We must see the needs, both physical and spiritual, and meet these needs in a timely and effective fashion. Churches must focus on the wounded, broken, and hurting and not on the church building, more money, and how we can improve our country club atmosphere while all the time lying to ourselves that we are a hospital for the wounded and a rescue shelter for the hurting. Our visions, dreams, and goals should be to live our lives in a radical way as we love God and love people. It should be to radically love people in a modern, relevant, and fresh way. I believe only then will our visions, dreams, and goals of new church buildings, improved programming, increased giving, and enhanced ministry ever be truly accomplished in a manner that brings glory to God.

The Lord's Supper.

"For I recieved from the Lord that which I aslo delieved to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me."In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new convenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes."-1 Corinthians 11:23-26 NASB

These are often the verses read before a minister shares Communion (The Lord's Supper) with his local body. I apologize for being a slacker, but sometimes that happens.

As normal, I was working at church today. I normally work on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Today was not different. I arrived at Greer First around 11:30. After sending an e-mail to Brittny about something she is working on for me, I began the list of things that I needed to do today. So, I began to do the work and then took off for lunch around 12:30. I decided that I wanted some good Hash on Rice so I went to Mutts BBQ. As I was driving around Greer and down the roads that leads to Mutts. I saw several churches, of all denominations, line the streets of Greer and I began to think.

"What makes Greer First Baptist different than these other churches? What makes the people of the Greer area, who seek authentic biblical community, come to First Baptist?"

Now, this isn't a blog to talk in a negative way about Greer First. This is just my mind. Of course, this is my mind for all churches. What are we doing to make our churches the best that we can for GOD'S GLORY. No matter if we like it or not, we have to have big events. We have to be better than somebody else. There is competition. Maybe that shouldn't be the way it is, but it's how it works. So, what are we doing in a way that glorifies God?

The simple things.

glass bottles of A&W Rootbeer make me happy.

the fact that they are like $1 at Wal-Mart makes me happier.

Does complexity fuel complacency?

Does complexity fuel complacency? When looking at the local church, that question enters my mind. I have been in the local church for all of my life. I have seen different church sizes, different styles of worship, and different visions and dreams. When it is all said and done, I have found that most churches are stuck in a lifestyle of complacency. I wonder, what is the reason behind this complacency?

Does the complacency fuel from complexity? The complexity that I am talking about is the complexity of the church's programming and function. If you take just a little glance at a churches calender you will find it very full. Small Groups, Sunday Morning Worship, Evangelistic efforts, Upwards; just to name a few, are scribbled all over the calender in a frantic effort to "fit everything in and make everybody happy". So, the question comes about. Do these events that keep us busy and stressed out bring out our complacency? Does it give us an excuse to be effortless in our relationship with the Lord, lazy in our approach to evangelism, and careless about our relationship with our brothers and sisters in Christ? Is the church being THE CHURCH? The church that was in the New Testament. The church that so many have died for. The church that our forefathers suffered to bring about.

Maybe we would be better off if we cut out a few programs and events that don't allow us to love God and love people, but just keep us busy. What would happen if we walked away from our complexity and rose up to be the church that Christ seeks to enter into a marriage with and the church that Christ shed His' blood for? Maybe then, and probably only then, will we see the great revival that we say we long for.

love God. love people.

My bed is calling my name.

I am not sure why the most interesting thoughts that pass through my brain come at night. Too often they come when I am tired and very worn out. While that is the case, I have started this new blog and I am going to use it! So, if this doesn't make sense I apologize. It's just the release of my heart.

The Lord has revealed a few things to me these past few days. He is always good when He does that. One of the things that I have been shown is how my life (i.e. places where I have lived, places I call "home", friends, ect.) and how I approach relationships are integrated into a huge operation. I don't really have a hometown. I have lived in 3 towns and none have been really any longer than the other. (7 years in Coats, 7 years in Wake Forest, and 6 years in Kingstree) Since I haven't stayed in one longer than another, I don't really know what to consider home. While Kingstree is where I was born, my connects to the area are very limited and are dying off as I speak. Wake Forest is where I "grew up". I spent my years in elementary school there, but like Kingstree I have no connection to Wake Forest. That leaves the town of Coats. Coats is where my parents are. Coats is also where I "go home" when I leave North Greenville on breaks and random weekend. While that is "home" for now, I am not sure I would consider it my hometown. For those from Coats, let me explain. I am a transplant to Coats from other places. I have not grown up in Coats, nor do I hold a great connection there outside of Coats Baptist where my dad serves on staff. I love the people and I love the town, but it isn't home. So, where is home? That I am not sure. I know what the scriptures say. I know that my citizenship is in Heaven. So, I cling to that. I cling to the fact that my home is with my Heavenly Father and that's it. While I LOVE all three towns (Coats more than the others), they aren't home. Don't ask me to explain it, it's just the way it is.

Another aspect of all of this is the fact that I don't really have any friends that I have known for life. There are very few people that I have been able to stay in contact with. The contact with people from Kingstree consist of "Happy Birthday!!" on Facebook or random Facebook messages throughout the year asking how they are doing. I have no connect to Wake Forest outside of being blessed with still a good relationship with Dr. Alvin Reid and his son Josh. I have seen Doc a few times in the past year or so. I still have connection to Coats. The Lord has blessed me with some great friends and people that are life family. People like the Dormans have blessed my life more than they know. While I do have connections there, since I have been to North Greenville, these connections have became strained. I know that there are people in Coats that I could call up in a heartbeat and they would be here for me, but at the same time things are different. I understand that leaving less than a week after graduation to go to West Virginia in 2007 didn't help the fact that I would leave for North Greenville after 4 days of coming home from West Virginia. I have just come to the grasp, that things change.

After understanding all of this, I understand how I now approach the Lord and my closest relationships. I approach the Lord as the only thing faithful and consistent in my life. I know that I will always have my family, but they have and will fail me The Lord had shown himself 'FAITHFUL' to me over and over again and He continues to remind me of that in ways that I could not even imagine. The second thing is how I approach relationships. I long for the consistency and security of relationships. Having not had many 'life long' friends, I find that I seek to makes those here at North Greenville. In relationships, of all kinds, I find myself seeking security and 'a sure thing'. I have learned that there isn't a 'sure thing' on earth. The only thing that is a 'sure thing' is the Lord and His' promises. Yes, there can be things on this earth that are 'sure things' when the Lord is in the middle; but only then.

Just some fat to chew on. Hope it's good.

love God. love people.

The start of it all...

So, I'm starting a new blog. There are several reasons why this is the case. One, my Xanga is just boring and so I got rid of it. Also, I thought that this would be more attracting than my Xanga and maybe more people would read it. So, this is the start of it all. All of my thoughts that fill my mind. Yes, the title of this blog is "The thoughts of an Intern...". And yes, there will be times that I write about my time serving at Greer First as an intern, but this is a place for me to just talk. Talk about everything from current events, local and global misions, the state of the church in America, and what is going on in the big city of Tigerville.

I hope you enjoy the time reading this. I promise that I will do my best to write more often than I did on my Xanga. The post might be short sweet and to the point, but that will be okay.

Just enjoy the thoughts of an intern.
